Stories in the 1700s

Blancpain was founded in 1735 in Villeret, Switzerland, by Jehan-Jaques Blancpain, making it one of the world’s oldest watch brands existing today. The Blancpain Watch company is currently entirely owned by the Swatch Group and its headquarters are in Biel, Switzerland.

In 1735, Jehan-Jaques Blancpain recognized the promise of a new industry – watchmaking – and founded the Blancpain brand, opening a workshop on the upper floor of his home in Villeret, Switzerland.

Development in the 1800s

In 1815, Blancpain was a watchmaker. He made it more extensive and more like an industry. It got better in 1815 when the great-grandson of Jehan-Jaques Blancpain did it after he died.

The idea of turning the crown wheel with a cylinder escapement mechanism came from Frédéric-Louis. It was an essential change in the watchmaking business.

Prominence in the 1900s

By the middle of the nineteenth century, Blancpain had become popular in Villeret because they were more competitive than other watch companies. They had to become fully industrialized because this made it easier for them to compete with other watch companies.

In 1865, Blancpain established a two-story facility to deal with the rivalry. Blancpain was one of the few watchmakers in Villeret today.

In 1926, Blancpain and John Harwood formed a partnership. From then on, they have been making watches with an automatic movement powered by your arm’s natural energy. This type of movement is found in high-end Swiss luxury timepieces.

In 1932, the company’s owner died. And his daughter wasn’t interested in it. So two people who were close to him bought the company and had to change its name for legal reasons.

The company was initially called Blancpain, but then it changed. Now it is Rayville. Even though the company’s name changed, its identity remains the same.

Until 1950, Betty Fiechter worked with her nephew. They brought new beginnings and management to Blancpain. The French navy needed an excellent diving watch in 1953.

Captain Bob Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud, the unit’s founders, contacted Blancpain’s CEO. They asked him to make a diving watch for them. The CEO took the initiative and created a famous diving watch called the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms in 1953.

The Quartz Crisis happened in the 1970s. People who made watches couldn’t make money because of it. The crisis caused a recession.

Frédéric Piguet was in a difficult financial situation. He sold his company to Jacques Blancpain and Jean-Claude Biver, who were employees of SSHI at the time. Frédéric moved the company’s manufacturing to Le Brassus, Switzerland, and renamed it Blancpain SA.

Blancpain’s management started to make watches that looked like old watches. They wanted the watch to be faithful to how Blancpain was when it first started.

SSIH repurchased Blancpain in 1992. Jean-Claude Biver remained the company’s CEO until 2003. Then SSIH changed its name to Swatch Group, and Blancpain became a part of it.
